Savings with Evesta smart thermostat!
The price of electricity and controlling the use of electricity has become important for all of us who consume electricity, and especially so for those who use electricity for heating, and at the latest during this heating season! Turku-based SpotNRG released a new Evesta smart thermostat in December, allowing those who use electricity for heating to easily reduce their electricity consumption without compromising comfort. The product is available for purchase in SpotNRG´s online web store, and the sales have started off with a posivite spin! But did you know what SADE Innovations and SADE Innovations´ partner OUMAN have to do with Evesta?

The Evesta smart thermostat is an innovation jointly developed by SADE Innovations, SpotNRG, and OUMAN. SADE Innovations is behind the cloud service and the mobile application, OUMAN has designed the thermostat, and SpotNRG offers the product to the consumer market. The cooperation of these three companies has brought to life the first independently working Finnish smart thermostat, which can be programmed to monitor price fluctuations on Nordpool´s power exchange market. The user does not notice the differences in temperatures, and the heating pattern can be set according to one´s own preferences.

Evesta is intended to be used primarily with direct electric floor heating. In homes, this kind of heating can be typically found in bathrooms and saunas, but often in other rooms as well. The smart thermostat is installed in the same place as the traditional thermostat, meaning that the traditional thermostats are replaced by the new smart thermostats. In addition to single-family houses, Evesta also works in apartment buildings and rowhouses, just as long as thermostat-controlled direct electric heating is used for heating the floors. In addition to underfloor heating, the smart thermostat can be connected to ceiling heating. And also other kinds of heaters are compatible, such as tile stoves and masonry heaters, if they just work with electric resistors. The more heat the heater stores, the better it is capable of making use of the cheap electricity when the Nordpool exchange prices are low.

Evesta thermostats are controlled by a mobile application, and who else than SADE Innovations is behind its code. The mobile app is used to define default temperatures and range values for expensive hours, i.e. how much the user allows the temperature to drop when the electricity is expensive. The range values are defined once, and after that the user doesn´t have to do anything more, unless, of course, if (s)he wants to 😊: electricity consumption and temperatures can be easily monitored on the phone screen, and fine-tuning the limits and other settings is easy. The settings and the data are stored in the Amazon Web Services cloud service, so the thermostat does not have to be connected to the user´s phone, and neither reading the data nor adjusting the settings is tied to a physical location of the user. This means that you don´t even have to remember to lower the temperature before taking off to your well-deserved spring break: you can do it on the go, as well as raise the temperature back to normal, for example, a day before coming back home.

"The mobile app, just like the cloud connection part, was a lot of fun to both ideate and implement”, says Tommi Juuti, SADE Innovations´ SW lead developer of the Evesta code. ”The cooperation with OUMAN and SpotNRG has been really smooth, because everyone´s main goal has been the one and the same since the beginning: make a useful and an easy-to-use product. And yes, there is clearly a market demand for this! Also now that we have talked about it a little bit more internally at SADE, it seems like quite many of us are going to order these for their own homes, simply because as a whole, this is such a good product! Easy to install, easy to use, and savings will come for sure”. 😁💪

The potential of intelligent control of heating is significant not only for individual consumers, but also for the entire electricity system of Finland. According to a dissertation reviewed at the University of Oulu in November, smart energy technologies in homes can save up to 30 percent of a single-family house´s energy consumption during the winter months. And according to Motiva´s Elvari research, renewing the thermostat can save up to 50 percent of the electricity consumption of the bathroom underfloor heating. The most expensive hours are peak power hours in the national electricity grid, when the electricity is produced and consumed the most. Flexing consumption downward during these peak hours reduces the load on the national network and the risk of power outages is reduced as well. This improves the reliability of the whole electrical system, especially during the coldest winter weeks.
