Top 5 Mistakes in IoT Projects – and How to Avoid Them
An IoT project, done right, can transform your entire business – delivering savings, new service models, and greater customer satisfaction. But when poorly designed, it can turn into a slow, expensive, and hard-to-maintain burden.

At SADE Innovations, we’ve been part of hundreds of successful projects – and we’ve also seen, up close, the pitfalls where things often go wrong. Here are the five most common mistakes – and more importantly, how we avoid them at SADE.

⚠️ 1. Clinging to the Past – Sticking with the Old or Refusing to Let Go of the Bad
The mistake: This happens in two ways:
a) There's no remote access at all, and its potential isn’t understood. The mindset is “we’ve always managed without” – missing out on all the benefits remote monitoring, analytics, and automation can offer.
b) There is a remote system in place, but it’s expensive, rigid, and it doesn´t scale up. And still, nobody wants to let it go – instead, hacks and workarounds are built on top of it to keep it alive.
The fix: Often, the smarter choice is to build a new, scalable, modern system that will serve you well into the future. At SADE, we’ve carried out numerous successful migrations to SADE Booster and AWS – efficiently and reliably. In one case, we even merged three separate customer cloud environments into one, migrating tens of thousands of users into the new AWS Booster cloud.

⚠️ 2. Failing to Think Ahead – The System Doesn’t Scale or Grow
The mistake: A solution is built to work “for now,” without considering future expansion, changes in the number of users, or new business opportunities. In the worst case, a closed and costly system is created from the very beginning.
The fix: Leverage the power of the cloud. Serverless architectures and event-driven systems (like SADE Booster) enable a low-cost start and unlimited scalability – both up and down. And you only pay for what you use. This provides both technical and business agility.

⚠️ 3. Devices, Cloud, and UI Designed Separately
The mistake: Each part (hardware, electronics, software, user interface) is developed in isolation by different parties, without a unified end-to-end plan. The result? Compatibility issues and project delays.
The fix: Plan the whole solution as an end-to-end system from day one. SADE Innovations provides the entire chain – design, implementation, and integration – with one point of contact. And when using SADE Booster, the full end-to-end functionality is already verified.

⚠️ 4. Forgetting the Users – Or Ignoring Their Feedback
The mistake: The system is designed from the developer’s perspective, without involving real users. And once the product is out, the feedback flood begins: “How can this be so difficult to use!?”
The truth: Designers and developers become blind to their own work. What seems logical to them isn’t always logical to users. And let’s be honest – users don’t want to spend time learning a new system. It just has to work.
The fix: User testing and feedback are essential. We organize hands-on user test sessions already at the prototype stage – and our customers have live access to our development environment! This gives us continuous feedback to improve design and deliver a truly great user experience. It’s not extra work for us – it’s a must for success.

⚠️ 5. Trying to Handle Security Alone
The mistake: Building a full IoT solution from scratch – including security. This often leads to manual processes, weak protection, and difficult maintenance.
The fix: Don’t even try to reinvent the security wheel. Major cloud providers like AWS invest “zillions” in security. At SADE, we build on those ready-made, continuously improving security solutions as part of our architecture – so your systems and data are protected from the start.

👉 Got an IoT project in mind – or already underway?
Let’s talk. A quick conversation won’t cost you a thing, but it might significantly change the future of your business.

If your devices are already in the cloud – let’s do it better. If not – let’s get you there.
