Typed, Reactive, Serverless - SADE Technology stack
Quite a title, right? But its every word is meaningful! Despite the fact that as a company, SADE is far from reactive (the right word would be proactive), SADE can be highly Reactive, Typed, and also Serverless when writing our code 😁. As well as a large part of the customer projects of SADE Innovations, also our own product, Booster IoT asset, has been primarily made with Typescript and React, and for our cloud service we make use of AWS Serverless architecture. Sounds interesting? Read below to discover what these trendy terms mean in practice, and why SADE Innovations has selected to use these technologies!

Tero Nordström, CTO of SADE Innovations: ”When we were discussing what kinds of requirements need to be addressed in the development of our own Booster IoT asset that is to be customer customizable, we went through a multitude of various technological alternatives, and finally, came to a conclusion surprisingly easily. Not only is React downright fun in all its efficacy for a front-end developer but to top it, using Typescript we can avoid the typical problems of pure Javascript that doesn´t have static types. As a consequence, the quality level of our code remains high at all times, both in the front end and in the back end. And what we have also experienced, as a bonus, is that this serves as a clear advantage when recruiting new talents to the team: if you have a chance, of course, who would not prefer working with modern and high-quality technologies”.

As a programming language, Typescript can be used both for the front end and for the back end. And with its static types, the quality level of the code is innately higher than with Javascript --- being specifically why Typescript was developed in the first place. React, for its part, offers the same technology base both for Web App (React) and Mobile App (React Native) development, and sharing code between web and mobile applications is also possible. In addition, using React Native, it is possible to write mobile application code just one time. In other words, there is no more need to write different code for iOS and Android: the same code runs in both. Tero continues: ”All in all, this brings us efficiency and quality due to the fact that our software developers don´t need to learn various programming languages & application frameworks, and we can make use of the same code in Web, Android, and iOS environments”.

What about AWS (Amazon Web Services) Serverless architecture, the base of almost all of the SADE cloud solutions, then? It is no news for anyone nowadays that in the 2020s, physical data centers and company-owned servers are nothing more than remnants of history for any cost-conscious company with high quality standards. But it has not been until the rise of the Serverless solutions that the companies have really been able to let go of the management of this infrastructure as a whole: the company uses only those services that it needs, runs only that code that it needs to run, and runs the code only when it needs to be run --- and pays only for the time when it is run. It is then on the cloud service provider´s responsibility to take care of the needed servers, of their capacity, and of their availability. All in all, this means that when developing cloud services for our customers, knowing that AWS takes care of the basic functionality, we at SADE Innovations can focus on what is important for our customers: added business value.

SADE Innovations uses AWS Serverless solution in our Booster IoT asset and in our customer projects. AWS was the first cloud service provider to launch a Serverless solution to the marketplace, and the AWS offering is both extensive and reliable. Of the key AWS Serverless services used by SADE Innovations, two can be highlighted: AWS Lambda that offers a runtime environment for the Booster IoT asset code and its functions, and AWS DynamoDB that offers an automatically scalable serverless database. The services are usable globally (through so-called AWS regions) both instantly and 24/7, and expenses incur only when the code is run, or when database operations are carried out. And what is great as far as the costs are concerned, is that the costs are scaled along with the business success, and many AWS services come with an initial free tier (for example, storing data to AWS DynamoDB is free of charge for the first 25 GB)! Security and user authentication, for their part, work in an integrated manner through AWS IAM and Cognito, and the data is encrypted from the device to the database in the cloud (at-transit & at-rest), meaning that for example the GDPR requirements are automatically and securely in order. In practice, this means not only world-class security level but also considerable cost savings, because it is AWS who takes care of all the needed maintenance and updates in regards, not the customer.
