SADE Innovations in smart poles
Is light pole a light pole? ”Well, yeah, I guess so, a light pole is probably a light pole”, most people would say. But could it be something else, too? Could it even be called something different? Would it be possible to turn the whole thinking around, so that a light pole would actually be just a part of a smart pole, where street lightning is just one function, and the pole would be connected to the internet with all other poles, and those poles could be controlled and monitored remotely, and those smart poles would enable a digital 5G network and also the digital backbone for the whole city? And that the poles would also be equipped with batteries that would not only guarantee the power supply during blackouts but that would also even out peak demands in the local power grid? And maybe a lot more?
In other words, could light poles form a network of smart poles that would enable not only digital communication but also the load balancing of the electrical grid of the city --- and also handle street lightning 😁?
Or does it sound way too futuristic? Or does it sound like it wouldn´t be even possible to control this kind of complexity in any easy way? Well… it depends who you ask.
Actually, truth is stranger than fiction: this has already been done! And thousands of people have already seen these smart poles live, either knowing it, or unwittingly --- not only in Dubai World Expo but also in Nokia Campus in Karaportti in Espoo, Finland! The current development phase of the smart pole, data platform and related smart city services is successfully completed, the pre-commercial pilot field environment is up and running, and now the Luxturrim 5G ecosystem is investing efforts in commercialization.
The project is called LuxTurrim 5G and it´s all about the cooperation of the Luxturrim 5G ecosystem, where many major players, from Nokia to Teleste and from Caruna to Vaisala, are contributing their best, and where the needs of the partners are fulfilled in cooperation with every partnering party. Starting from 5G base stations: smart poles offer a perfect place for the 5G base stations because there are a lot of light poles in the cities, located quite close to each other, and this is how the 5G base stations need to be located as well. A perfect common need and a solution 😊. Or another example, service and maintenance: taking care of a network of back up power, consisting of various small batteries, would be quite cost inefficient if taken care of in a traditional way (ie. not remotely) because it would require the service personnel to make rounds from one pole to another not only regularly but also very repeatedly.
All in all, there are 26 direct partners in the LuxTurrim 5G ecosystem, and SADE Innovations is in it through its client L7Drive. You can see the results of the work of SADE Innovations in many parts of the the project: SADE Innovations has implemented the IoT connectivity module of the pole controller (electronics & firmware), along with the L7Drive cloud and its admin application for web browser for controlling the poles remotely. And as a base of all this, you will find no other than SADE Booster Iot Asset 😁. The solution based on SADE Booster allows for the smart poles to be monitored and controlled in a secure manner, individually and in groups, and the settings can be easily configured as wished for by the customer. For example, limits can be set to batteries´ charge levels, where the poles (if needed) can stop to use the electricity from the power grid, ie. start using battery power, and in this way the peak demands in the power grid will be evened out as desired.
So in the end, it´s not about poles, really (no matter if we call them light poles or smart poles!), but it´s all about the digital backbone of a smart city. A digital backbone, where 5G base stations, video cameras, radars, lidars, and sensors needed for air quality or carbon dioxide measurements come together (among others!) as natural development opportunities for new applications. We just can´t wait what the future has in store for us and what kinds of benefits we will see stemming out from all this --- and where we can contribute!
