Farpointe Data

Customer context

Farpointe Data, based in San Jose, California, USA, supplies readers and credentials used in access control installations globally. The physical card has been the industry's default for decades.

Farpointe Data wanted the phone to replace the access card, sold as a service through its dealer channel.

The solution has to work for the person walking up to a door with a phone in one hand, and for the administrator who has to issue and revoke that credential for hundreds of people. The door has to open as fast as a card did, or the change is a downgrade no matter what it enables.

What the solution gives each group

Anyone who used to have a keycard

The phone is the badge: credentials in the phone wallet, no card to carry.

Security administrators

Credentials issued and managed centrally and delivered by email or SMS, with no cards to print.

Dealers

Mobile credentials sold as a service bring recurring revenue.

Integration partners

An API lets third-party access control systems manage credentials.

The challenge

Moving credentials to a smartphone changes the whole chain: the reader firmware, the credential lifecycle, the way a credential is issued and revoked, and the app the user actually touches. Security expectations do not relax because the medium changed.

Why the obvious solution was not enough

Access control is a domain where a generic IoT platform is a poor fit. The behaviour of the reader, the credential format and the trust model are the product, and they have to interoperate with installations already in the field.

The SADE approach

SADE worked across the device and application layers to bring mobile credentials into Farpointe's product line, combining embedded work on the reader side with a cloud backend and mobile application.

Technology and delivery

  • Embedded development on the reader side
  • Cloud services for credential management
  • Mobile application for carrying and presenting credentials
  • Remote monitoring and analytics views

Business outcome

  • Access credentials can be issued and used from a smartphone
  • Access control installations gain remote monitoring and analytics
  • Digitized access control demonstrated publicly as a hands-on demo

What happens next

Mobile credentials continue to expand across Farpointe's product range. SADE Innovations and Farpointe Data continue to expand the features.
