Harvia

Customer context

Most saunas in use are not connected. This sensor turns any sauna, also wood-burning ones, into a smart sauna without replacing the heater.

Harvia is the global leader in the sauna market. Its MyHarvia 2 app controls Harvia Fenix heaters, but Fenix works only with a Fenix heater, and a wood-burning stove has no electronics at all. So without Harvia Sauna Sensor, many saunas would stay outside the smart sauna.

Harvia Sauna Sensor is for anyone who has a sauna - of any type or any manufacturer. It can be a Harvia sauna, or it can be some other sauna. It can be a sauna with an electric heater, or it can be a wood-heated sauna - at home or at the cabin. The user may also have several saunas. One app shows it all: one sauna or several.

What the solution gives each group

Sauna owners

Know when the sauna is ready, how long heating takes and when to add firewood. See the temperature and humidity without standing next to the stove.

Hotels, spas and rentals

Monitor many saunas from one place, with fewer on-site checks. Alerts on heating irregularities, for example when the door is left open.

Family and guests

Visibility of the sauna's status, via shared access by the host.

Harvia

A new product for the installed base, with session and energy data from real use.

The challenge

Turn any sauna, even a wood-heated one, into a smart sauna. The device has to sit in a hot sauna and run for years on a battery, connect over WiFi, and feed a mobile app that tells the user in real time what is happening.

Why the obvious solution was not enough

A plain temperature sensor shows a number and nothing more. The user needs answers: when will the sauna be ready, is something wrong with the heating, when should I add logs. That takes a device, a cloud and an app designed together, and a battery that survives the heat of a sauna.

The SADE approach

SADE built the whole solution together with Harvia, from device design to the cloud and the mobile app: the device, a high-temperature battery solution, the user interface, WiFi connectivity, the AWS-based SADE Booster cloud for real-time monitoring and analytics, and the MyHarvia 2 app. The result is a subtle addition to the sauna experience: technology that supports the tradition instead of disturbing it.

Technology and delivery

  • Design of the wireless Sauna Sensor device
  • High-temperature battery solution with a lifespan of approximately 3 years
  • WiFi connectivity and user interface
  • AWS-based SADE Booster cloud for real-time monitoring and analytics
  • AI that learns your own sauna: the more you use it, the better it predicts when the sauna is ready and spots anything unusual
  • MyHarvia 2 mobile application for one or several saunas

Business outcome

  • Temperature, humidity and use in real time, in the app, anywhere
  • The app estimates the heating time and notifies when the sauna is ready
  • Irregular heating is detected, for example a door left open
  • With a wood-burning stove the app tells when to add firewood, so the fire does not die out by accident
  • The data enables energy optimisation and predictive maintenance over time, for example estimating when to replace the sauna stones

What happens next

The MyHarvia Smart Sauna Sensor is on sale through retailers, in Harvia's online store in Finland and on Amazon in the United States.
